One of the artworks at new exhibition Ka Awatea – Ngā Reo Hou – New voices is Marguerite King s ‘Beautiful Sting’. The specialist creative wellbeing initiative began in 2015 after the Canterbury earthquakes to support people with experience of mental distress through studio groups, artist mentoring, collaborative projects and exhibitions. It has a membership of 85 artists between the ages of 18 and 75. Morton said the exhibition would feature digital work, drawing, painting and printmaking. Most of the work was created with the pandemic as the backdrop. “The pandemic revealed a new understanding of living in isolation, something that is all too familiar for some people who experience mental distress.”
