The event was a test to see whether social distancing measures can be eased without triggering new coronavirus outbreaks.
LONDON: Several thousand music fans on Friday became the first people in Britain in more than a year to legally dance, drink and listen to music in a nightclub, as part of a test to see whether social distancing measures can be eased without triggering new coronavirus outbreaks.
The afternoon-admission gig at a warehouse in Liverpool, northwest England, is one of a series of pilot events sponsored by the U.K. government and closely monitored by public health officials. The 3,000 attendees, all local residents, were to be tested before and after the event, while researchers will study air quality and movement in the venue.
A pilot event which saw around 3,000 clubbers return to the dancefloor has been hailed as a glimpse of what the future might hold by public health leaders.
Liverpool director of public health Matt Ashton said it was “wonderful” to see the looks on people’s faces at The First Dance, hosted by club night Circus, in the city on Friday.
Revellers, who all had to produce negative coronavirus tests, did not have to wear face coverings or social distance for the first time since before lockdown began.
It is hoped the event, the first of two taking place on consecutive nights, will pave the way for clubs across the country to reopen their doors.

Social media has been set alight by pictures of a mask free rave in Liverpool as people across the UK hope the easing of restrictions goes ahead as planned next month.
Thousands of revellers have been dancing shoulder-to-shoulder at Britain s second post-lockdown rave at a Liverpool nightclub tonight.
Nightlife promoter Circus is hosting The First Dance in Liverpool - where revellers do not have to wear face coverings or social distance for the first time since before lockdown began.
Inside the venue, footage showed ravers dancing mask-free, inches away from each other as headliner Fat Boy Slim played his set.
Just hours earlier, groups were seen queuing up outside for the final night of the two-day event, as some posed for pictures clutching bottles of wine and beer.
Tonight s lineup comes after crowds packed the floor in the Bramley-Moore Dock warehouse last night.
