Bloemkers mark 50th anniversary

Delores and Darvin Bloemker
ALTON Darvin Alan Bloemker and the former Delores Jean Manda will celebrate 50 years of marriage June 26.
They were married on June 26, 1971, at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church in upper Alton by the Reverend Arnold Leverenz.
The couple met while teaching Drafting and Home Economics at Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville. Darvin Bloemker retired from the Engineering Technology Department at Western Illinois University in 2002. He continued to teach, do academic advising and OSHA safety training for Lewis & Clark Community College until 2012.
Delores Bloemker retired from working at the Learning Tree & Copy Bee in Alton as an assistant store manager. She also was a teacher, teacher’s aide and substitute teacher for several school districts in the western Illinois region for 20 years.

U of Portland, Willamette U to require COVID-19 vaccinations

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) University of Portland officials announced on Tuesday that the school will require proof of COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, faculty and staff when the fall semester starts.
The Catholic university said in a news release that employees must provide proof of vaccination by Aug. 1 and students must provide proof by Sept. 1.
The news release says more than 100 colleges and universities nationally have announced vaccination requirements for students and/or employees, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education.
“As we have stated from the start of the pandemic, the health and well-being of (University of Portland) community members must be our collective priority,” wrote University President Rev. Mark L. Lewis & Clark College to require COVID student vaccinations

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Lewis & Clark College has announced that it will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all students this fall.
According to a database maintained by the Chronicle of Higher Education, it’s the first institution in Oregon to announce that requirement, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.
In an email to students sent Wednesday, the private college in Portland said all students must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption by Oct. 15. The policy doesn t apply to online programs.
“We are eager to return to what we do best: in-person classes in a close-knit environment on one of the nation’s most beautiful campuses,” wrote Robin Holmes-Sullivan, Lewis & Clark vice president of Student Life and dean of students.
