Roskomnadzor opens 8 administrative cases in relation to Radio Liberty projects
MOSCOW. Jan 12 (Interfax) - Russian telecommunications watchdog Roskomnadzor has drawn up eight of 18 administrative offence reports with regard to four websites that are projects of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty corporation for not displaying markings denoting them as media outlets designated as foreign agents in Russia, and these will be forwarded to courts within the next three days. The first eight reports have been drawn up under Article 19.31.1 of Administrative Violations Code with regard to media outlets functioning as foreign agents without complying with the law requiring that they duly mark the information they spread. In the presence of representatives of the media outlets acting as foreign agents, the reports were drawn up due to the absence of markings on four websites. The Russian Ministry of Justice on Monday added veteran rights activist Lev Ponomaryov and four other individuals to its list of media “foreign agents.” This is the first time that individuals have been added to the list of “foreign agents,” as the legislation has previously been used primarily against media outlets.
The “foreign agent” law requires foreign entities such as nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to label themselves as foreign agents when entering, communicating or interacting with citizens of the country. The law was amended in 2019 to include those who communicate with foreign media outlets.
On Monday, five individuals were added to the list of media “foreign agents.” Rights activist Lev Ponomarev has been a longtime critic of President Vladimir Putin.
