working women getting out anti-trump votes. you re seeing that in some parts around the country. there were eight parties. let s talk about california, the gubernatorial race. john cox couldphe down ballot. and a big disappointment for antonio villaraigosa. reporter: antonio villaraigosa was the former los angeles mayor. originally, a lot of people thought the contest would be between gavin newsom, the lieutenant governor of california and villaraigosa. because of trump s tweets and his support of john cox, john cox w rising in the final weeks and days. that s a big deal, he ended up in the number two spot for republicans. leaders like kevin mccarthy were
problem, and if he can take every newsom attack on trump and turn it back into let s talk about california, i think this could become a much closer race. abby: gavin newsom tweeted respond good good night for campaign. he says please come campaign for him, trump, as much as possible. harris: bill hemmer s interview this morning with mr. cox. i would say this. he can do the things you are talking about because we watched him do it live on fox news this morning. he talked all about the spending and the legacy of the spending and the problems with the spending right now in the context of questions about sanctuary cities and all of that start of thing. he did that pivot from the criticism on the president that you are talking about. i know it s one interview. it was the first one i ve seen of him live since kind of taking on newsom. but it s interesting. newsom is part of that apparatus in california that is very tough to beat so it
businesses start to spend money on capital and equipment and that usually is a precursor for jobs. so i think we re seeing slow but steady improvement now. that s good news. that is good. let s talk about california, the goldest state which has been anything but golden these last few years. the unemployment rate has dropped below august 2009. the job rate is down to 11.9%. is this, jim, a good indicator as to how well the rest of the country is doing? it s good news because california obviously it s one of our biggest economies. they ve lost a lot of businesses to other states. to states like tennessee and here in texas that have lower tax rates. if they re starting to add jobs back that s a good sign for the rest of the economy. the challenge, alex, is that the overall economy is starting to slow down a little bit. we ve seen leading economic indicators start to turn back down. we ve seen manufacturing start to slow down a little bit.
by the end of this year you ll reach the bottom. let me tell you what s happening right now. you re seeing prices down 3.8%, still hurts for the value of your largest asset. $183,700. 22.3% are under water, that means your house is worth less than the value of the mortgage right now. this number continues to climb. so look, i want to be clear, you re still kind of having some rough going in terms of value of your home. let s talk about california, quickly. this has been an epicenter of the housing crash crisis. i want to talk about some of these areas showing a little bit of signs of life. let me pull this over. the l.a. metro home area prices up also in san diego and san francisco. 3.7%. santa barbara up 2.9%. you re seeing finally an end to
