Extinction Rebellion issued an ultimatum to Dutch King Willem-Alexander on Tuesday to demand that he speak out against fossil fuel financing by King’s Day. Otherwise, activists from the environmental list group will create a blockade on the A10 ring road around Amsterdam at noon during the holiday, the organization threatened.
A total of 326 climate activists were arrested on Saturday afternoon during the Extinction Rebellion blockade on the A10 near the VUMC hospital in Amsterdam. Of those, 31 people were arrested for causing the blockade and endangering traffic.
Climate activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) plan to block the A10 highway in Amsterdam for the second time on Saturday around noon, near the former ING headquarters in Amsterdam-Zuid. They are demanding that ING stop all financing and services for the fossil fuel industry. The Amsterdam Triangle (mayor, police and public prosecutor) considers the action extremely dangerous and has banned it.
Right at the start of the Extinction Rebellion blockade on the A10, the police arrested 17 activists. According to the police, they had caused a blockade with cars, which is “Life-threatening for other road users and themselves,” the police wrote on X. The police also announced that arrests would be made if the climate activists did not leave the A10 soon.
Extinction Rebellion (XR) interrupted the opening of the Rijksmuseum’s first Frans Hals exhibit on Friday to protest against ING as one of the museum’s main sponsors. Activists posed next to the paintings in the exhibit with AI replicas showing the masterworks, but with the climate disasters that await if global warming isn’t limited.
