guess who is coming to new york ewdays. the week after that. bothbbouas d netanyahu. do you think they ll have more s talks on the sidelines of the u.n. general assembly in two weeks? i kind of doubt that, actually. my guess is that the outcome of the talks this week will be an agreement to talk again in two more weeks. and i think they will spend their time in new york largely lobbying other foreign leaders trying to shore up their international positions. it will be a very, very interesting week in new york next week. that s for sure. well, what happe when the palestinians don t wantco to recognize a jewish state, israel, at at the same time, you have the potential settlement issue. i think the precipitating event on the talks will be t maneuvering around the end of th settlement moratorium that prime minister netanyahu imposed 10 months ago. and what i woul look for would be the israelis to modify the moratorium and extend it onlyn part and see if abbas and the
point in the past few days, we ve seen five rockets fly from gaza, fired by militants into israel. the israeli military hasg responded by pounding som of those hamas stronghods within the gaza strip. of course, we saw this kind of violence before in the weeks leing up to the talks in washington that happened around the first of the month.as so far, hamas has promised mor of this kind of violence asai ty try to derail the peace talks. a bit of encouraging news, however, on this one point. that s both the palestinians and the israelie negotiating team seem to be dealing with thi issue of violence separately from the peace talks. today, at his cabinet meeting, prime minister tanyahu laid out what he says is going to be the israeli negotiating position and that s the palestinians must a jewish israel as state. so far, the palestinians have refuseto do that. both sides, however, have begun to play out their differences in thoe lcal press.
anin e newspapers here. and historically, that has been a very bad sign as the hard-liners in each government start to offer these very provocative tidbits to each sid of these newspaper, the disagreements, then, seem to get even worse. of course, we re waiting to see how thislays out, jamie, tuesday, egypt. wednesday, back here in jerusalem. secretary of state clinton is flying to the region to moderate both sets of ttalks. but the one thing to keep in mind, jamie, is both the palestinians and the israelis ha laid out things that they call deal breakers in this negotiation. that the other side has simply said is not going to happen. leland live from jerusalem as we follow the lead up to the talks. thanks so much. well, are the peace talks l really the last chance? why would secretary of state hillary clinton claim that? joining us is ambassador john bolten, the former united states ambassador to the united nations, fox news contributor who joins us every sunday at about this time.
glad to be here. is it really the last chance? the last chance ever? no, i i don t think so. but i think what secretary clinton is trying to do is torque up the pressure. i think she can see as wells the rest of us these talks are on the verge of collapse alrh ey even though they ve just started. and she s trying to build up prsure that will keep the talks going. we just heard from leland in jerusalem that there are deal breakers that both sides are not that they re still refusing to not give in. no, exactly. i think this demonstrates thad plomacy can only bridge differences when the differences are bridgeable a they re just not that s just not in the cards at this time. i think, though, thathe israelis and the palestinians seeing the impending breakdown of the talks ares try sg to position themselves so that the other side can be blamed. and i think that s a lot of what s gng on here with then. rhetoric and so on. well, t weeks ago, youf predicted that the first set of t
lestinians walk out othe talks. at wouldbe one way to position israel so that the palestinians get the blame. w that s part of what s gonna happen here, i think. the president says extending that deadline makes sense. oewhat if israel does extend it just by a little bit and abbas does not walk out? well, i think that s precisely one of the options you could look at. a one mexonth extension. or you could extend most of the moratoum but not all of it. that s allowing some settlement construction. that might precipitate an abbas walkout. think that that s one reason that prime minister netanyahu also put on the table today is dissatisfaction with the palestinians refusing to acknowledge that israel was a jewish state. that s one more element that s absolutely critical for his coalition government and that gives him justification if he has to walk out. yeah, we re not even talking about the issue of hamas which is continuing its attacks. let mewitch now to iran, one of our favorite s
