MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - A Montgomery County circuit court judge heard arguments Friday on whether to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to stop the progress on Alabamaâs multi-billion dollar mega-prison construction plan.
Gov. Kay Ivey signed two contracts with the prison giant CoreCivic in February to build two mega-prisons in Elmore and Escambia counties because Alabamaâs current prisons are in terrible condition.
With these 30-year contracts, the prisons will be operated by the Alabama Department of Corrections and maintained by CoreCivic throughout the duration of the lease.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Corrections have filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to block construction of the governorâs $3 billion mega-prisons project.
âThe lawsuit, rooted in baseless allegations and failed interpretations of State law, is nothing more than an attempt to impede the Stateâs forward progress in addressing critical infrastructure needs, improving its correctional system, and building a more rehabilitative, therapeutic environment for Alabamaâs population of incarcerated people,â the ADOC said in a statement.
