Readers respond: Front-line workers need protection

Thank you, Leslie Montag, for your Dec. 10 letter, “No mask, no hospital bed.” Montag writes that if you don’t believe in science about the COVID-19 virus, please sign a waiver that you will not take up a hospital bed if you get sick. As a registered nurse working at a local hospital, it has been disheartening to watch so many people disregard recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health care workers are getting burned out, but what is equally frustrating is the lack of protection the hospital provides for front-line nurses who may be exposed to COVID-19. Offering financial incentives to care for these patients is not enough. Money will not protect me or my co-workers from contracting coronavirus. We need hospitals to step up and protect the already fatigued and depleted nursing staff.
