WATERTOWN â Dr. Alison Villanueva has been chosen to lead the Watertown Public Schools as its new superintendent. The Board of Education voted 7 to 1 to appoint her to the position at a special meeting on December 21, with member Cathie Rinaldi voting no.
Chairman Leslie Crotty was authorized to negotiate a contract, with a start date of January 25.
Ms. Crotty explained Dr. Villanueva rose to the top of the candidate list, having demonstrated a thorough understanding of educational excellence while communicating a collaborative, open style of leadership.Â
She has demonstrated an impressive understanding of Watertown, its goals and vision, and the search committee felt she would be able to move successfully through the current pandemic challenges.

WATERTOWN â The Board of Education, meeting Monday, December 14, held a moment of silence for Kaytlynn Schaefer, a junior at Watertown High School, who died at home on Sunday, November 29.
Interim Superintendent Dr. John Ramos described Ms. Schaefer as âA kind, caring, and compassionate young woman with a superb sense of style and a fun, witty sense of humor. Kaytlynn was a member of the Watertown High School Chapter of Best Buddies, a club that encourages meaningful friendships between students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and non-disabled peers.â
He also noted her participation in the high schoolâs Anti-Defamation League workshop last year. âHer insights about being an adolescent in 2020 made the workshop more meaningful for both staff members and all of the students who were in attendance.
