THE Opposition UNC on Monday night wrested the Arima Central district away from the PNM in the local government by-elections. The UNC also retained the Cunupia and Hindustan/St Mary s districts.
The PNM meanwhile seemed on course to retain control of the Hollywood and Alyce Glen/Morne Coco districts.
Addressing party supporters at the M Rampersad Building in San Fernando, UNC political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said, The breaking news tonight is that the UNC has won the Arima Central seat. They told me before, but I didn t want to announce it till I saw the statement of poll. This confirms Arima Central is now in the House of the Rising Sun.

The ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) yesterday lost significant ground in Tobago House of Assembly (THA) polls and also lost one seat in Trinidad by-elections.
The PNM lost a handful of seats to the Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) and tied with the Watson Duke led party for control of the THA. And the PNM also lost the Arima Central district to the United National Congress (UNC) in yesterday’s local government by-elections

THE PNM, UNC and Independent candidates in Monday s by-election in Hollywood, Point Fortin expressed satisfaction with the voting process. They were all optimistic of chances of victory.
Speaking with reporters after he voted at Fanny Village Government Primary School, UNC candidate Daniel John said, he had no problems with casting his vote and the process put in place by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) was going smoothly.

THE United National Congress (UNC) is set to begin screening candidates for the January 25 by-elections in five electoral districts just after Christmas.
The People’s National Movement (PNM) has already announced candidates for the five positions left vacant by councillors and mayors who contested and won in the August 10 general election and were sworn in as MPs.
Those who became MP’s are former Point Fortin mayor and councillor for Hollywood Kennedy Richards, now MP for Point Fortin; former councillor for St Mary’s/Hindustan, Moruga MP Michelle Benjamin;former mayor of Chaguanas and councillor for Cunupia, Chaguanas East MP Vandana Mohit; former Arima mayor and Arima/Arima Central councillor, D’Abadie/O’Meara MP and Minister in the Minister of Education, Lisa Morris-Julian; and Communications Minister and Diego Martin Central MP Symon de Nobriga.
