FRESH concerns have been raised over the condition of the access to the Sletts pier in Lerwick.
A letter from local resident Ryan Leith highlighting the âdangerous conditionâ of the access road was discussed at a meeting of Lerwick Community Council in Monday night.
He said the rock armouring has been moved by numerous winter storms over the years.

The pier itself is effectively a flat section of rock which runs out into the sea, and in more recent times it has been used by swimmers.
There is access via steps from the Sletts footpath, as well as a track from the bottom of Sletts Road.
LERWICK Community Council is to write to Shetland Recreational Trust to express concern over the prospect of Clickimin Leisure Complex’s indoor bowling area being reduced in size to make way for a soft play equipment for children.
It comes amid grave worry from the company behind plans for a soft play facility in Voe that installing larger equipment in the Clickimin would threaten the viability of their business venture.

The situation revolves around a proposal to install a soft play facility and sensory rooms in part of the indoor bowling room at the Clickimin, which would reduce the overall size of the bowling area from four rinks to three.

PROPOSALS for a mobile phone mast near Lerwick Town Hall have suffered another setback after gaining no support from members of Shetland Islands Council’s planning committee.
Lerwick North councillor Malcolm Bell said the 17.5 metre mast would be a “monstrosity” if it was erected in its proposed location at the top of Quendale Lane near Hillhead.

An appeal on the previously refused plans went in front of the planning committee on Monday and councillors upheld the original decision.
Telefónica, which owns mobile operator O2, had applied to install the mast and associated infrastructure to improve network services in the area.

THE OPERATOR of Lerwick Power Station has reassured local residents over the safety of a new battery energy system due to be installed in the building later this year.
It comes after town councillor John Fraser said in a meeting of Lerwick Community Council on Monday that he had been contacted by constituents concerned about the safety of the 8MW battery.

He said their worries stemmed from the battery being a “potentially combustible piece of equipment”.
Fraser was keen for the community council to contact power operator SSE to give reassurance to local residents – particularly those living near to the station – that the installation and maintenance of the battery had been fully risk assessed.
