Covid-hit Lerotholi Polytechnic shut down
MASERU-LEROTHOLI Polytechnic was shut down on Tuesday after its bursar allegedly succumbed to Covid-19 on Monday.
The head of the institution, Professor Tlali Sepiriti, said they are still waiting for Covid-19 results.
He said the bursar, a Zimbabwean national, felt sick on Monday and went home.
thepost has withheld his name since we were not sure if his next of kin has been informed.
“He is a foreigner who was staying alone and we had asked some of our colleagues to check on him time and again,” Prof Sepiriti said.
He said the deceased had tested for Covid and was still waiting for his results.
Computers for rural schools
MASERU-IN 2005, the government pledged to develop ICT curricula for all levels of the education system by 2020.
Fifteen years on, it remains a pipedream despite the country adopting a national ICT policy aimed at entrenching the learning of ICTs in schools.
This week, Communications Minister Chief Thesele ’Maseribane said the government expects 65 percent of children that enter primary, secondary and tertiary to get connected on the e-learning platform.
He said this while launching the ministry’s three-year strategic plan.
For many students and their teachers, these remain words, especially because most schools have no computers or electricity to make the dream come true.
MASERU-ACADEMIC and non-academic staff at Lerotholi Polytechnic want the rector, Professor Sepiriti Tlali, out.
The staff downed tools this week and protested at the college’s campus complaining of what they said was Prof Tlali’s “autocratic style of management”.
They said they have lost confidence in the Rector.
They also listed a litany of grievances against Prof Tlali.
“No staff meetings, no interactions with staff,” the workers said in their three-page letter of grievances handed to the rector’s office.
“Over and above, the management has ignored the conditions of classrooms, labs and academic staff offices yet their own offices are cosy havens,” the workers said.
