WHAT BOOK would novelist Wilbur Smith take to a desert island?

…are you reading now? I’m revisiting the majestic Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. It’s quite a thing to stretch hundreds of thousands of years into one book and look at the history of mankind through such a long lens. I’ve become enamoured with the chapter on hunters and gatherers and I find myself agreeing with the author: they had it best. They walked the earth, hunting for food and gathering berries, moving with the seasons, never worrying about material possessions. The people who invented farming might have eaten well, but they were stuck in one place and obsessed with how much grain they stored, building up reserves they could never use themselves.

County ordered to pay lodge owner Sh339m

THE STANDARD By Phares Mutembei | February 16th 2021 at 00:00:00 GMT +0300 The Meru County government has been ordered to pay Sh339.1 million to owners of Leopard Rock located in Meru National Park. High Court Judge Patrick Jeremy Otieno awarded the amount to Leopard Rock Mico Ltd, which was evicted from the park by the county. The award was the compensation amount recommended by chartered arbitrator Calvin Nyachoti on December 19, 2019 for the cost of the facilities installed by the company that is owned by Michael Jean Dechauffur, and the cost of movable assets left at the hotel. The evicted investor had operated Leopard Lodge, which is built on approximately 40 acres belonging to the defunct Nyambene County Council, from 2001 to 2018 under a lease instrument executed in 2001.
