The 22nd Annual Native Hawaiian Convention gets underway today at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, Maui. The four day event was moved to Maui this year to uplift the voices and people following the Aug. 8 wildfires.
Historic Lahaina church invites community to help them clear their mortgage

The gathering hall at Waiola Church has become a Lahaina architectural landmark.
LAHAINA Waiola Church, formerly Waine’e Church, founded in 1823 by Sacred High Chiefess Keōpūolani has been a community cornerstone for nearly 200 years. Nestled on the grounds is the impressive hall building, host of many community meetings, birthday parties, weddings, fundraisers, and the current home of Pūnana Leo o Lahaina. Designed in 1996 by Architect Thomas Cannon of Architects Maui, the steep, ventilated roofline suggests a traditional Hawaiian hale halawai, or gathering hall.
Punana Leo Preschools offer safe and unique learning opportunities for keiki

Through strict hygiene and social-distancing protocols, Punana Leo o Lahaina (pictured) and all ‘Aha Punana Leo sites statewide welcomed keiki back to the classrooms in August 2020. There have been no incidents of COVID-19.
LAHAINA Since implementing strict health and safety protocols at its preschool campuses statewide last summer, ‘Aha Punana Leo (APL) keiki (children) and kumu (teachers) have been able to return to the classroom and continue to engage and thrive in safe learning honua (environments). Without incidents of COVID-19 infections at any of its statewide sites since reopening, Punana Leo Preschools have set a precedent for the upcoming 2021-22 school year.
