Many of the choices we make in trying to live in a more sustainable, ethical and environmentally-conscious way involve deliberate efforts on our part. We remember to bring our own reusable bags with us when we shop; we go out of our way to visit the markets or shops that don’t use plastic packaging; we seek out ethical energy suppliers to power our homes, and clothing brands produce garments responsibly. But a big part of my life as a conscious consumer is investing in craftsmanship and objects made by hand.
Objects that are made by hand are, by their very nature, more sustainable than mass-produced or machine-made objects. Craftspeople need time to produce their creations; they work slowly, deliberately, with care, and in doing so they are naturally less wasteful, wanting to be mindful of the materials and resources they lean on.
