Campbell Hardware celebrates 75th anniversary

By John Underwood / john@gulfcoastmedia.com ROBERTSDALE, Alabama Campbell’s Hardware & Sporting Goods celebrated 75 years at the same location, hosting an outdoor gathering on Friday, April 23 for members of the community. “My father once told me that if you take care of the community, the community will always take care of you,” said owner Nelson Wingo. “It is because of you that we are here, so this day is to celebrate you.” Founded in 1946, Leonard Campbell and William L. Wingo started the business in downtown Robertsdale with only three employees. In the early 70s, Wingo bought out the business from his cousin and his son, John Nelson Wingo Sr., took over operations in 1974, increasing the sporting goods department to what it is today while expanding the business to include more than 15 employees.

LCSO: Fort Myers woman struck Lee County sheriff s deputy with SUV

A Fort Myers woman was arrested after the Lee County Sheriff s Office said she intentionally struck a deputy who was assisting with traffic control at 2 a.m. Monday for an event at the Fort Myers Event Center on Park Meadows Drive in Fort Myers. A deputy signaled for a tan GMC Denali being driven by Allaunah Williams, 27, to stop. Instead Williams ignored the command, revved the engine and struck the deputy, LCSO said. The deputy, who was later transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, radioed for help as the vehicle fled the scene.  “I am outraged and will not tolerate acts of violence toward our deputies,” Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a release. “I am so thankful our deputy is going to be okay.”
