Winnipegger Leona Fontaine, 48, says the federal budget does little to help improve her current situation. The single mother, who was working as an educational assistant in Winnipeg, was laid off from her job when the pandemic hit last year. (Austin Grabish/CBC)

The Winnipeg contract educational assistant was laid off, and her position was later eliminated. I was shaking. I broke down. I was crying. I just didn t know where money was going to come from, Fontaine, 48, said.
