Publix pharmacies are now allowing customers to walk in without an appointment and get a COVID-19 vaccine.
Already CVS, Walgreens, Winn-Dixie, Walmart, and Sam s Club allow walk-ins for COVID-19 vaccines. Now Publix joins the list. But appointments are still recommended as retailers can only accommodate walk-ins if there is enough vaccine supply. Leon County Health Department spokesperson Pam Saulsby said supply for the vaccine has outstripped demand. Many vaccine providers are having to come up with new ways to vaccinate the hard to reach and the hesitant. As much as demand is falling, DOH Leon believes there are still people who very much want to get it but have not been able to, Saulsby said in a statement to WFSU.

The Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH Leon) recognizes April 24-May 1 as World Immunization Week, and is reminding parents that is not too early for children entering kindergarten or 7th grade in the 2021-2022 school year to receive vaccinations required for school entry or attendance.
DOH Leon is committed to boosting childhood vaccination rates in our community and helping families who may have fallen behind get back on track with their vaccines.
“While the world focuses on critically important new vaccines to protect against COVID-19, there remains a need to ensure routine vaccinations are not missed,” said DOH Leon Health Officer Claudia Blackburn.
The Leon County Health Department will relocate its COVID-19 vaccination site to the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, effective Monday, May 3.
The relocation to an indoor site will help healthcare workers and residents going for a vaccination to avoid increasing seasonal temperatures, humidity and unpredictable thunderstorms.
The department says existing appointments for a COVID-19 vaccine will be honored at the new site.
“We know that through May and the summer months, the weather will be getting too warm for our staff, volunteers, and partners to be safely outside while our patients are in their cars,” Leon Health Officer Claudia Blackburn said in a statement.
As of January 1st in Leon County, 12 people have tested positive for COVID-19 at least two weeks after receiving their second dose, classifying them as breakthrough cases.
