I still remember my first ever trip to Still Bay. It was on an Eastern Province team tour to the SA Surfing championships in Cape Town. One of the EP team stalwarts at that time was Richard Roth, nicknamed Ricky R six-star. He had two of the letters “R” on his board back-to-back in a mirror image with six stars underneath. Quite a charismatic chap.
Thirty-eight years ago is a long time ago. 1985. I had completed my degree at Rhodes University and was then completing compulsory military service in Gqeberha. Surfboards at that time had evolved from the MR twin to the Simon Anderson thruster and everybody the world over was dedicated to the shortboard and three fin revolution.
