Paul Rutman’s brilliantly plotted detective drama begins with a taxi ride. Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) is the one behind the wheel. A chilly, charmless type, Hegarty doesn’t say why he’s moonlighting as a driver – that bit will come later. For now, he ‘entertains’ a couple of insufferable passengers with grisly stories from the day job, like the time he discovered some poor chap who’d been beaten and gagged by burglars and left to die alone in his apartment over Christmas.
