In China there is a name for women who are not currently married, or have never married, and are older. The phrase is
Sheng nu. It translates to leftover women. By “older,” they mean those who remain unmarried into their late twenties.I was married and divorced by the time I was 26, and I felt “left over.” Even having been married didn’t ease the embarrassment I had at being discarded, and single at 26. Ah, the angst of youth. My feelings were also an indictment of societies that value married women more than single ones, and young women over older ones.
