country that s at war. there is an irony because it s sort of a lend lease program for those historians watching you tonight. the use of u.s. equipment that went to the soviet union in world war ii, this is exactly what s happening giving it to poland excuse me, poland giving it to ukraine. what s also fascinating, if it is mig aircraft or aircraft it would double the irony because all of that is former soviet-type equipment from the warsaw pact. there are some issues here that are fascinating, too, pamela. the first thing i would say is poland and ukraine has formed a veritable bond in the middle of europe. during the fighting in afghanistan they, in fact had a unit together and we affectionately called it the polukr brigade.
this patriot missile battery system that the u.s. has moved in. in place and ready to go now. is this as much a message to putin as it is to nato allies? it is. it s certainly a message to nato allies that we ll defend nato article five. i kind of had a slight smile across my face for a second imagining that battery being operated by ukrainians on ukrainian territory, how that would devastate russia s ability to use air power. it s not yet too late, especially if this grinds on, that we ll provide these sophisticated systems, but it s certainly something for putin to think about if we re pushing patriot batteries there, what is the potential for patriot batteries to be given by a lend lease program via ukraine to operate. wouldn t quite be a game changer, but it really, really
this lend lease program, it s the humanitarian aide ukraine needs, the medicine, build warehouses, non-permanent warehouses and everything the ukrainians need to sustain themselves through the war. a big part of that is the weapons and we should follow the turks lead providing these drones that have been pretty effective so if we re not prepared to do a no fly zone and i understand there concerns, we may find ourselves there because we are far from done. putin is not done. this is going to turn into a much, much bigger catastrophe and we might end up there. we have to make difficult choices down the road and that s providing drones, providing for medium range surface to air missile systems that keep us out
