Advocacy groups in court bid to end rodeo in New Zealand

Horsetalk.co.nz Two New Zealand animal advocacy groups have filed proceedings against the Government and the country’s National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee over the sport of rodeo. Proceedings were filed on Monday by the New Zealand Animal Law Association (NZALA) and Save Animals From Exploitation (SAFE), asserting that rodeo events are in violation of the Animal Welfare Act. SAFE is eyeing a “complete, legal ban” of the sport. The group’s chief executive, Debra Ashton, said: “We’ve had enough. We’ve tried everything, and now, we’ll see the Government in court” . Season Opener For Musk Ox Stranded On Ice Floes

The musk ox get stranded on the ice floes after wandering onto the sea ice during breakup. Most of the musk ox can be found in the coastal waters near Nunivak Island and Nelson Island. Residents don’t need a permit or a tag to participate in the hunt, and can take up to two musk ox. Hunters must submit a photo verifying that the musk ox were taken from a free-floating ice floe surrounded by sea water. Photos should be submitted to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game within 48 hours of harvesting. Musk ox season is set to close on June 30.
