the floor at lemieux. when folks talk about the deficit and leaving deficit for our children, we will never get out of debt in this country until people get back to work, until they have good paying jobs, and in between times we will not move in economy forward until we are helping people to be able to keep going in this recession. on behalf of the 99ers last week i spoke personally with senator stabenow, and i asked her to bring this to the senate floor. because this would be the last opportunity for any kind of help until the middle of november. she told me she would. and she did. it s nice to know that there s a politician in washington that is still good to their word. she is. and i made a commitment to stay on this story, but i m afraid that this is the final chapter until after the election. a group of 99ers, who call themselves no vos, they have pledged not to vote for any
them to run, are senate appointees the new game changers. joining me is shawn, from real clear politics. let s talk about the appointees on the hill. in the senate specifically. two groups of them. those who were placeholders and use holding the seat for usually those who appointed them and some who make a run for themselves. tell us about the different groups. the place holders. senator good wi goodwin who was recently appointed and senator lemieux. may run for reelection shortly or want to have an election in their future. and then people at the end of their career, senator burris and senator kaufman of illinois and delaware. the people at the end of their career really have nothing to lose and so you saw some noises during the healthcare debate that senator burris might tank the healthcare bill because it wasn t liberal enough and they really had no leverage over him.
he eventually came around. others like senator goodwin and lemieux, they are young people and they know they are just holding the place for their losses and so they reflect on their losses. i think you will see senator goodwin having a tough time on a lot of the votes because a lot of the votes will be attributed to governor mansion who appointed him and he doesn t want to potentially endanger what is looking like an easy election bid for the governor in the fall. shannon: you mentioned a lot of the folks appointed know they are short termers, short timers on the hill don t have a lot to lose. but how much power do they have on the little hitting in the seats maybe 16 month, 18 months, maybe not much long. since it takes 60 votes to push things through the senate, the democrats need every vote they can get. and so someone like senator bennett or gillebrand have a tremendous amount of power. for the republicans, if one republican breaks ranks and votes with the democrats they
can get their agenda through so someone like senator lemieux has a ton of power in the senate right now. for those that want to stick around and run for their seat or come back to get involved in another open seat or challenge, for them are they running as a fresh face or will they have some of that taint of being an incumbent at some point when that is not the most popular place to be with voters in the u.s. someone like senator gillebrand, all of a sudden running statewide in new york, her base of support shifts to manhattan and she has to introduce herself to the voters quickly. there is the threat of a primary challenge so she a tacked way to the left in only less than a year in office. someone like michael bennett in colorado he did face a primary challenge from the left and has had a very liberal voting record even though he represents a swing state like colorado. in a state like, new york, that is not necessarily a bad thing
