The
number of enrollees under the National Health Insurance Scheme is still very low since the law was passed in the country. What is responsible for the slow growth?
The first law that was passed in the country, which is the Act 35 of 1999, focused strictly on the formal sector. The formal sector comprises the public sector and the organised private sector. And we all know that the entire population of those that are working in the formal sector as we speak is less than 15 per cent. Out of that, less than 15 per cent are civil servants working in all the states of the federation and the local governments. So, they were not covered. The Emir of Awe in Nasarawa State, Alh. Isah Abubakar Umar has submitted that traditional rulers have great roles to play in ensuring the security of lives and property in the country.
The monarch disclosed this during a condolence visit to the Emir of Kaura Namoda, Maj. Sanusi Muhammad Asha, (rtd) whose eight aides were killed by suspected terrorists in December, last year.
The monarch, therefore, appealed to the federal government and security agencies to always include traditional rulers in the scheme of things as critical stakeholders in security, adding that they should be accorded adequate support to play their constitutional role in addressing the insecurity ravaging the country.
The Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, has warned that the Coronavirus pandemic is spreading fast, causing mild symptoms in some victims and severe illnesses and death in others.
Ihekweazu disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at the joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.
He said that many victims have continued to experience fatigue and other symptoms, even after recovery.
According to him, in the last four weeks, the country has recorded a spike in the number of new COVID-19 cases.
“We have now reported over 100,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria, and this is a stark reminder of the reality we live in now.
