Local health researchers urge government to regulate vaping

Local health researchers urge government to regulate vaping By Sameer Naik Share Local public health researchers want the government to revive legislation intended to regulate e-cigarettes, saying they are being heavily marketed to young people as a means to stop smoking, but don’t help people kick the habit for good. They want the government to pass the Control of Tobacco and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill into law urgently. “This bill would put South Africa back on track as one of the leading countries on tobacco control in the continent,” Professor Lekan Ayo-Yusuf, director of the Africa Centre for Tobacco Industry Monitoring and Policy Research (ATIM) at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) said this week.

Push for new e-cigarette and smoking laws in South Africa

Push for new e-cigarette and smoking laws in South Africa Subscribe Public health researchers have called on the government to pass the Control of Tobacco and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill into law. The bill is expected to further regulate the use, marketing and sales of e-cigarettes or vapes in South Africa, with these products currently operating in a legislative vacuum. In a report published by the Africa Centre for Tobacco Industry Monitoring and Policy Research (ATIM), the researchers said that it has now been two years since the bill was closed for public comments. During this time the e-cigarette industry, currently largely unregulated, has further taken hold in South Africa.
