Some roads in Northern Southland are affected by flooding on Saturday after rain on Friday caused rivers to rise.
Environment Southland activated its flood warning system late on Friday after heavy rain fell in the headwaters of rivers in the province, and the Otago Regional Council had issued a warning for one river at West Otago. Environment Southland s flood warning issued at 4pm said the Mataura River was above normal and rising at Cattle Flat, Pyramid, Gore and Wyndham. The Aparima River at Thornbury was above normal and rising, while the Oreti River and the Waikaia River were both falling.
The road into Waikaia has been cut off by flood waters.
The Waikaia River water levels at Piano Flat are the highest on record, Emergency Management Southland group controller Angus McKay says. Water levels along the Waikaia River at Piano Flat reached higher levels than the flooding in February last year. According to Environment Southland environmental data, at 11.20am water levels were at 3.263 metres, which is 2.263 metres above normal at the Waikaia River, near the Waikaia township. There would be more rain on Sunday afternoon, but water levels were starting to drop, McKay said. Campers at Piano Flat left the site on Saturday, with a few people taking refuge in nearby houses.

A low pressure system from the west is bringing with it heavy rain for areas throughout Otago and the lower South Island.
A Clutha District Council spokesperson says roading contractors are out assessing the situation.
They are keeping a close eye on the Pomahaka River at Leithen Glen, as it rises towards a second flood alert level.
