URGENT calls have been made to move historic stones etched with wartime messages away from an “eyesore” viewing platform, with the hope of protecting Leigh’s history. Since plans to restore the Belvedere, a century-old viewing platform were proposed around six years ago, a whole host of anti-social problems have plagued the site on Cliff Parade, including graffiti and litter such as broken glass and syringe needles. Now, Andrew Wilkins, vice chairman of Leigh Town Council, believes the best option would be to move the stones - etched with wartime messages dating as far back as 1911 - from the Belvedere to Strand Wharf.
