NEW DELHI: A day after ordering NSA detainee Leichombam Erendro’s immediate release, the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Manipur government to respond to his plea for compensation and fixing of accountability on officers for his illegal detention over a social media post on inefficacy of cow urine and dung against Covid-19.
For Erendro’s father L Raghmani Singh, advocate Shadan Farasat pressed for fixing accountability and compensation before a bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and MR Shah, which asked the Manipur government to file its counter affidavit to petition by Singh within two weeks. Solicitor general Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state, requested the court to give a quietus to the issue and dispose of the petition as Erendro has already been released pursuant to Monday’s order of the SC. However, when the petitioner’s counsel refused to back down from his demand, the SG said then the state would file documents to justify its actions in detaining Erendr
