DDWS announces high school photo winners of contest

Following judging on Feb. 25, the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge announced the winners and finalists of the eighth annual “Ding” Darling-Theodore Cross High School Photography Contest at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel. Due to COVID protocols, the DDWS will not hold an award ceremony this year.
Sponsored by the Theodore Cross Family Charitable Foundation, the competition invited high school students from Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Glades, and Hendry counties to compete for prizes that included a Canon digital SLR camera package, chartered class trips to the refuge, Tarpon Bay Explorers excursions and copies of “Waterbirds: Portraits and Anecdotes from Birding Adventures” by contest namesake, the late Theodore Cross.

Marshall T. Bower, president & CEO of The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, summed up the special challenges of this school year well in his announcement of these top teachers. “During this very trying time in our community and throughout the world, there has been an eye-opening recognition of the importance of the teaching profession,” he said. “Teachers have gone above and beyond to make sure they are meeting the needs of our community’s most valuable asset, our students. These 30 Golden Apple Finalists are outstanding representatives of all our great teachers.
On Wednesday, Bryan Harsin and Auburn signed six players to its 2021 recruiting class. The Tigers now have signed 17 total players to their 2021 class.

As part of The News Literacy Project, ABC 27 teamed with Leon High School journalism students, Chamber Miller and Peyton Gallant to design, write, film, edit and publish a news story of their own. The finished product will air on ABC 27's 6 p.m. newscast on Friday, January 29, 2021
