A former state lawmaker is expected in court for sentencing in a federal corruption case that’s drawn attention to a perennial problem in the islands: the tens of thousands of cesspools that release 50 million gallons of raw sewage into the state’s pristine waters every day.
A judge has set a new sentencing date for former state Rep. Ty Cullen. The ex-lawmaker earlier this year pleaded guilty to one count in connection with his acceptance of bribes when he was in office.
The state House of Representatives has unanimously adopted a resolution creating a commission that will recommend how to boost the effectiveness of state ethics, lobbying and campaign finance laws. The House acted after two former lawmakers earlier this week pleaded guilty in connection with accepting bribes.
