Pingtung, Dec. 8 (CNA) Pingtung District Court on Thursday dismissed a request by Su Ching-chuan (蘇清泉), the Kuomintang's (KMT) Pingtung magistrate candidate in the Nov. 26 local elections, for a recount of votes cast in the election.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has officially nominated Deputy Legislative speaker Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌) for Taichung mayor in local government elections scheduled for Nov. 26.
Tsai is the best candidate to improve Taichung, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), who is also the DPP chairperson, told a news conference in Taipei on Wednesday.
Tsai Chi-chang has been a deputy legislative speaker since 2016, giving him the experience to govern Taichung with a broader and more comprehensive vision to help the city’s development, the president said.
He likely faces an uphill battle if incumbent Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) seeks re-election.
Although
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials yesterday called for unity after public polls confirmed DPP Legislator Chou Chun-mi (周春米) as the party’s nominee for Pingtung County commissioner in November’s election.
Chou received the most support among county residents at 58.98 percent in a one-on-one contest against potential Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) candidate and former legislator Su Ching-chuan (蘇清泉), who polled at 12.66 percent, figures from three polls showed.
Incumbent Pingtung legislators Chuang Jui-hsiung (莊瑞雄) and Chung Chia-pin (鍾佳濱) trailed closely behind Chou with 51.64 and 44.87 percent support respectively.

School puts up wall hangings to commemorate bullying victim

Taipei, April 20 (CNA) A series of metal wall hangings, depicting a rose and a tree, have been installed at Gao Shu Junior High School in Pingtung County, in commemoration of a late student, who had been bullied over his effeminate demeanor.
Yeh Yung-chih (葉永鋕), who was a senior at the school 21 years ago, died in hospital on April 21, 2000, a day after he was found lying in a pool of blood on the floor of the school bathroom.
Foul play was not a factor in his death, authorities ruled, citing a lack of any intentional injuries, and the opinion was that Yeh had fainted and fallen due to pre-existing conditions.
