Mukherjee was cherished in India and Bangladesh. As Bangladesh fought for freedom, she would perform free concerts to raise money for the 10 million East Pakistan citizens who were forced to seek refuge in India.
She was considered one of the sweetest voices of playback singing in the 60s and 70s. She has thousands of songs in Bengali and nearly dozen in other languages to her credit.
