The Legal Services Authority Act, 1987, is an Act to constitute legal services authorities to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of the society to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.

The Supreme Court has said ‘Lok Adalats’, organised across the country to dispose of cases, do not have jurisdiction to go into merits of the matter as it is meant to arrive at a compromise or settlement between the parties in a dispute.
