The passing of Missouri’s Constitutional Amendment 3 makes it the first state to automatically forgive past crimes of marijuana possession through the people’s vote. Possession, usage and distribution of recreational marijuana has been decriminalized. Past offenses will be expunged from the criminal records of those charged and sales will be legal by December 8, 2022. Distribution to minors and violent crimes will not be judicially forgiven and remain illegal.
Republicans scored big wins from Eric Schmitt in the U.S. Senate contest and Scott Fitzpatrick in the auditor’s race, but Democrats came out on top in Missouri’s only competitive state Senate contest and gained in the House.
Voters approved recreational marijuana in Maryland and Missouri but rejected it in three other states, signaling support gradually growing for legalization even in conservative parts of the country.
