The United Auto Workers (UAW) wants Congress to bail out General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler to prevent their undergoing restructuring in bankruptcy proceedings. In bankruptcy, a judge could order union contracts to be renegotiated to reflect competitive realities. Many analysts have objected that hourly autoworkers at the Big Three are some of the most highly paid workers in America, costing the Big Three over $70 an hour in wages and current and future benefits. All taxpayers should not be taxed to preserve the affluence of a few.
investments but we want them to make those investments in the united states. just to keep in mind, this is a company over the last three years that has had profits in excess of $30 billion. that s $30 billion with a b. and we also should remind ourselves it wasn t that long ago that the u.s. government stepped in with the support of the workers and workers took significant concessions simply to keep the company from going bankrupt and disappearing. it wasn t the mexican government that stepped up. it was the american government and american auto workers. so the changes that the union is fighting for, i support. okay. they have temporary workers. new workers getting about half the pay that traditional workers have gotten. that needs to change. so i see both sides of your argument. yes, the u.s. government bailed out general motors with u.s. tax dollars in the midst of the great recession. part of the reason general motors wasn t able to stay afloat was the legacy costs in a
union wages we had in the midwest. tucker: when china was admitted, i remember a bipartisan chorus saying it would not kill american jobs. everything would be fine and it was all upside. and hundreds of thousands of american jobs were destroyed by that. do you think the people who lied about that should be held to account somehow? these were people in positions of power and i think for many corporations it was very, very good. all of a sudden you don t have those legacy costs and you are not paying ae union wso there in corporations where they are doing really, really well under that scenario. those jobs primarily are almost ion health care lifted up communities and those are people who voted for school levies, police and fire levees. and so now we have to figure out
