Legacy Co-op supports Yorkton & District Community Foundation

“ Co-operatives are always involved in their communities and wherever we serve throughout Western Canada cooperatives are known for caring about their customers and the community at large,” says Gene Krepakevich, Vice President of Legacy Co-op. “It gives us great pleasure to be able to give back to our community.” With this donation Legacy Co-op is establishing a named endowment fund that will grow year after year to support annual grants, local charities, and communities in the district. Yorkton & District Community Foundation is operated by a local volunteer board of directors and is a member of Community Foundations of Canada. Community foundations connect donors and charities to identify and address local community needs, advocate for meaningful social change and to make meaningful and lasting contributions to the well-being of the community.

Yorkton RCMP, local businesses launch fraud prevention initiative

REGINA The Yorkton RCMP, Yorkton Chamber of Commerce and local businesses put a new fraud prevention initiative in to motion on Thursday. Over the past two years the Yorkton RCMP detachment has heard over 300 complaints of fraud. These cases see a constantly changing story from the fraudsters on the line, but a vast majority of them end in requesting the victim to purchase gift cards. “We’re pretty happy with the participation that we have in the program, we’ve pretty much covered off, to the best of our knowledge at least, the majority of the retailers of the types of cards that are being victimized,” said S/SGT Jeff Simpson of the Yorkton RCMP.

Legacy Co-op launches Christmas Gift Campaign for local seniors

“We identified earlier on this fall that with the additional challenges and restrictions surrounding COVID-19, our Seniors are really going to feel the impact and Christmas may be an even lonelier time than usual,” said Co-op General Manager Bruce Thurston. “Many of the seniors in these facilities have minimal outside contact. At this time of year, to get a personalized gift and a letter from someone who cares about them, can really make their day.” Working with the care home teams, Legacy Co-op has donated funds to allow for the purchase of a personalized gift which each resident will receive along with a Christmas letter from the Legacy Co-op team.

Local initiative to prevent gift card fraud launched

S/Sgt. Jeff Simpson said that over the past two years, the Yorkton RCMP has received approximately 310 complaints related to frauds within the jurisdiction. He said they are often changing their ‘sales pitch’, but they share one thing in common, they are trying to solicit funds from the victim. Sometimes, it’s through a direct transfer, but most cases it’s through alternative payment such as gift cards.   “Gift cards are a preferred method of victimization due to the fact that they’re virtually untraceable, universal across multiple jurisdictions and countries, and have a resale value on the black market,” explained Simpson.
