Bianca Smith has read the comments and heard the critics. For the newest Red Sox minor-league coach, facing doubters is nothing new.
Smith, who was hired last week as the first Black female coach in pro baseball history, has let the skeptics fuel her quick rise in the game. A former Dartmouth softball and club baseball player, the 29-year-old Smith is a self-proclaimed competition addict. Those who have questioned if she belongs in a male-dominated industry only make her want to succeed more.
