Planning Commission denies special exception for Colora solar project

ELKTON — The solar farm planned for a small parcel of farmland in Colora has been withdrawn by the applicant, according to the Cecil County Office of Land Use and Development. Stephen O’Connor, acting director, said the application from Alder Energy and John and Marcia Harnish was withdrawn Tuesday, hours after the Cecil County Planning Commission voted to deny a special exception needed to build the 6,630-panel array on the land zoned for Northern Agricultural Residential. This came after more than three hours of testimony before the commission that preceded the unanimous vote Monday night to deny a request from a South Carolina company and a Pennsylvania property owner to construct a large scale solar generation station in and area surrounded by some 50 houses in Colora.

Leeds City Schools system sees improvement in revenues

By Nathan Prewett LEEDS – A meeting of the Leeds Board of Education on April 14 was attended by Superintendent John Moore, board president Scott Sisk, and members Kathy Dutton and Chad Anderson while members Jeff Hudson and Aaron Moyana were absent. The meeting began with a March and February report from Finance Officer Ryan Miller. Miller reported that the system was in the sixth month of the fiscal year, which is half-way. As of March 30, the system is at 64.31% of the general fund revenue and 95.21% of the local revenue. Miller said that this is an improvement over previous reports where the revenues had suffered a slight decrease. Other schools throughout the county and elsewhere had seen a decrease in their revenues as well, partly as an effect of the COVID pandemic.

CCPS to have in-person classes twice a week

ELKTON — On Feb. 22, Cecil County Public Schools (CCPS) will begin having in-person instruction two days a week. Wednesdays will remain entirely virtual, with students attending on Mondays and Tuesdays or Thursdays and Fridays. Students who were part of the first 5% return group will remain in class for four days a week. Completely virtual education will remain an option for families who wish to stay at home. Individual schools will distribute information about when specific students will attend class. When making the decision, the district took into account community spread, students and staff reporting positive cases, and the Cecil County Health Department, who approved of the expansion of face-to-face learning, according to CCPS Public Information Officer Kelly Keeton.
