Leeds City Schools system sees improvement in revenues

By Nathan Prewett LEEDS – A meeting of the Leeds Board of Education on April 14 was attended by Superintendent John Moore, board president Scott Sisk, and members Kathy Dutton and Chad Anderson while members Jeff Hudson and Aaron Moyana were absent. The meeting began with a March and February report from Finance Officer Ryan Miller. Miller reported that the system was in the sixth month of the fiscal year, which is half-way. As of March 30, the system is at 64.31% of the general fund revenue and 95.21% of the local revenue. Miller said that this is an improvement over previous reports where the revenues had suffered a slight decrease. Other schools throughout the county and elsewhere had seen a decrease in their revenues as well, partly as an effect of the COVID pandemic.

Leeds Board of Education discusses summer activities, literacy camp

By Nathan Prewett LEEDS – The Leeds Board of Education met on Tuesday, March 10 to discuss activities for the coming summer season, as well as job positions that are available in the school system. Chief School Financial Officer Ryan Miller gave the financial report saying that the system has received 48.79% of the general fund revenue and 83.29% of the local revenue. The system is still down as he reported in previous meetings but said that it is now catching up. Superintendent John Moore said that a protestation that the owners of the Outlet Shops at Grand River have made about their valuation may be affecting the slight decrease in revenue. According to Moore, the owners have been protesting their valuation since 2016, which they believe should be higher at $18 million than what the Jefferson County Board of Equalization says should be at $16 ½ million.

City of Leeds seeing some improvement after work on 'nuisance' properties

By Nathan Prewett Leeds As with previous meetings, the Monday, Jan. 18, 2021 meeting of the Leeds City Council was held virtually and by phone due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. The meeting began with a public hearing regarding a property on President St. that was being considered for declaration as a nuisance. However, Public Works Director Brad Watson said that the owners had made progress in improving it and recommended a 30-day extension. Jose Manual Betancourt Roman, who said that he is the son of the property owner, was online and spoke in favor of the extension, which was later approved unanimously. No one spoke against the consideration during the public hearing.

Leeds Board of Education recognizes nationally certified elementary teacher

By Nathan Prewett Leeds – At a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Leeds Board of Education recognized a teacher who received a National Board Certification. The teacher was Shelby Johnson, who instructs fifth grade at Leeds Elementary School, and was honored before the regular board meeting began. Certification with the National Board requires a series of tests in academic areas and submission of portfolios for evaluation. Superintendent John Moore described the process of certification as difficult and “daunting”, saying that it is a gold standard for educators throughout the nation. “She is a leader among teachers,” Moore said of Johnson. “She’s a special person, always goes above and beyond for her students and we’re very thankful she’s with Leeds city schools.”
