I do that every day. I depend on them. I would like to strengthen their role in doing that. I dont want to do that in any way that subtracts from their ability to give independent military advice, which i dont favor putting the chairman in the chain of command per se. The chairman gives, i just watched this every day, gives me and the president of the United States a very valuable, independent, professional military advice. That is really key that that be independent. But we can have both of those things at the same time. Lets move now on to the topic of minimum wage. Danielle has a question for senator hatch. Senator hatch, in your campaign, you talk about growing Small Businesses and also increasing the minimum wage. Now, many of the Small Business owners weve heard from say theyre worried about how an increase in the minimum wage would affect their business. How can you be in favor of both . Well, you know, good question. [laughter] but youre assuming that all Small Businesses pay below the minimum wage, which is wrong. Right now, there are 216,000 iowans that get less than the 10. 10 that we are proposing. Thats not a high wage. That allows an individual working 40 hours a week, works by the rules, works hard, works every day, to get just above the level of poverty. No iowan
Our speaker this morning, the former secretary of defense william perry, i first met when he was the deputy secretary of defense, and he and mrs. Perry came to korea where i was the c5j5 and i was assigned to escort them around. And i had a lot of those kinds of duties while i was assigned to korea. But it was the most pleasant experience i had and i say that honestly, to get to know these two people. And he then became our secretary of defense. And many of us that have served thought that he was one of the best secretary of defenses weve ever had. Hes currently a senior fellow at the Hoover Institute and a freeman Foley Institute of international studies. He is the michael and barbara bavarian professor at Stanford University and serves as codirector of the Nuclear Risk Reduction initiative and preventive defense project. Just as when we in San Francisco see not only what the military can bring to the party and help us with, not only how we can interact with the military, but also we say to ourselves, its also up to us to do everything we can for ourselves.
