In a recent editorial – titled Just take the money, Gov. DeSantis – and expand Medicaid – the Herald-Tribune Editorial Board called for the state to adopt Medicaid expansion, which would make health coverage available to hundreds of thousands of additional Floridians.
Such a proposal is certainly worthy of consideration and debate – as it has been on and off for several years now – but the Florida Legislature must first resolve to protect access to care for the 4.5 million Floridians already on Medicaid.
Despite the gravest public health crisis in a century, state lawmakers have proposed a significant cut to Medicaid funding, lowering how much Florida would reimburse hospitals for treating Medicaid patients. Such a cut is unnecessary, unwise and unimaginable in the face of the many challenges still confronting our state.
