Korea Times file By Yi Whan-woo The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) announced Thursday it added Coupang to its new chaebol watch list but that Kim Bom-suk, the founder and chairman of the Korean e-commence giant, was not named as the company chief due to his nationality. This means that Coupang faces stricter filing regulations, such as disclosing detailed information on management and business activities, but Korean American Kim and his family will avoid those regulations as well as accountability for any violations or scrutiny of his personal financial deals.

The Asahi Shimbun To compete with U.S. and Chinese information technology giants, the parent company of Yahoo Japan Corp. integrated its business with messaging app operator Line Corp. on March 1 to become Japan’s mega-digital “platformer.” The company created by the integration of Line and Z Holdings Corp., which is owned by Softbank Corp., operator of Yahoo Japan, will provide online services to an estimated 100 million users in Japan. The combined most recent sales of Line and Z Holdings is nearly equivalent to the roughly 1.4 trillion yen ($13 billion) earned by Rakuten Inc., one of the largest Japanese online business operators.

The firms are racing each other to attract talented workers, even those who are already employees of their rivals. Companies are on their toes as startups have joined the race, unveiling dramatic pay hikes. Zigbang s CEO stated last week that the property search platform operator will offer developers a starting annual salary of 60 million won. The CEO said it would also raise the annual pay for developers at the company by 20 million won. In addition, Zigbang said it would provide a bonus of up to 100 million won to experienced developers that join.
