Lee signed three executive orders Tuesday, including Executive Order No. 73, which goes into effect at 12:59 p.m. on December 29 and lasts until 12:59 p.m. on Feb. 27. In addition to extending the state of emergency, it also allows county mayors to enforce mask mandates. Gov. Lee has resisted continued calls to implement a statewide mask order. Executive Order 73 extends the state of emergency and provisions that have been critical to our COVID-19 response. He made the announcement during a statewide address. Governor Lee’s executive order went into effect at 11:59 p.m. Sunday and remains in place until Jan. 19. There are some exceptions – places of worship or for weddings or funerals. There is not a statewide face mask mandate and that didn’t change in this executive order, though many expected he would order that, too. Some counties have mask mandates in place. Instead, he asked Tennesseans to wear a face mask and not get caught up in the politics that some wish to inflict on the issue. Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, said in a signed executive order on Sunday he encourages Tennesseans to work remotely or via telework from home where possible and also limited public gatherings to a maximum of 10 people. “Limiting large social gatherings and spectator sports and athletic events will reduce the potential for events that lead to substantial spread and further diminish our health care capacity, while also allowing our economy to remain open and Tennesseans employed,” the governor said.
