22 April 2021 West Midlands CA chief executive Deborah Cadman has taken the same role at Birmingham City Council on an interim basis. Ms Cadman will serve for the period up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games and local elections, after which the recruitment of a permanent chief will begin. In February the previous interim, Chris Naylor, returned to Barking & Dagenham LBC after a secondment in Birmingham concluded several months earlier than planned. Ms Cadman was the first permanent chief executive of the combined authority when it was formed in 2017, having previously been chief executive of Suffolk CC. Ms Cadman, who described herself as “a Brummie born and bred”, said the opportunity to become chief executive was “one I just couldn’t turn down”.

Rebooted social work academy to focus on strengths and leadership

Credit: Monkey Business/Adobe Stock Medway is relaunching its social work academy as part of an overhaul of learning and development for social workers “Social workers are leaders of systems, so the social work academy needs to be a platform for developing leaders.” Lee-Anne Farach, Medway’s assistant director of children’s social care, is speaking alongside her principal social worker, Lori Goossen, about the relaunch of Medway’s social work academy next month. It is part of an overhaul of the learning and development offer in Medway that also includes the recruitment of a new role entirely focused on leadership and management development.
