Leavenworth County Commission honors fallen deputy with proclamation

Leavenworth County commissioners proclaimed Wednesday as Detective Cpl. Abramovitz Day. The proclamation honored Daniel Abramovitz, a member of the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office who was killed last year in a crash. His death is considered to have occurred in the line of duty. Members of the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office were on hand Wednesday when the proclamation was read by County Commission Chairman Mike Smith. Sheriff Andy Dedeke thanked commissioners for recognizing Abramovitz’s sacrifice. “He was a good friend and public servant,” Dedeke said. Abramovitz died Oct. 30 as a result of a crash at 211th Street and McIntyre Road.

Leavenworth County Sheriff s Office asks for information about crash

The Leavenworth Times The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for information about a crash that was reported south of Lansing. The crash was reported at 5:45 p.m. Sunday at Fairmount Road and 147th Street. A 16-year-old Lansing girl told deputies she was traveling south on 147th Street in a Chevrolet Impala. She stopped at a stop sign at Fairmount Road. She then proceeded south. As she was crossing through the intersection, an eastbound sedan struck the rear of her vehicle, according to a news release from Leavenworth County Undersheriff Jim Sherley. The driver of the sedan got out of his vehicle after the accident. He reportedly seemed angry but asked the other driver if she was OK. The man then reportedly got back into his vehicle and drove away.

Stolen handgun turns up at fiery crash scene

The Leavenworth Times Deputies found a stolen handgun at the scene of a fiery single-vehicle crash near Lansing, according to a news release from the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office. The crash was reported at 11:04 p.m. Monday at Kansas 5 Highway and Tontine Road. One person was taken to the hospital. Deputies believe a Dodge Caravan was traveling south on K-5 when it went off the road. The vehicle struck two trees before being deflected back onto the road. The vehicle spun around and caught on fire, according to a news release from Undersheriff Jim Sherley. The driver was not at the scene when deputies arrived.

Masks optional at Leavenworth police station

The wearing of face coverings is now optional when visiting the Leavenworth police station. Visitors who previously stepped past the reception area to other offices of the Leavenworth Police Department were required to wear masks because of COVID-19. But a sign posted at the police station now indicates masks are optional. Police Chief Pat Kitchens said the change was made at the beginning of the month. He said police officers were among the first group of people to receive a COVID-19 vaccine once administration of the shots began in the area. Kitchens said about 70% of the members of the Leavenworth Police Department elected to be vaccinated.
