Manitoba experts say the effects of the pandemic on education have been far-reaching, causing learning gaps, an overall lack of student confidence and a lack of critical skills.
When we started using a new literacy program 10 years ago, our reading scores were mediocre. Within a few years we had moved up to being a Level 1+ school, which is one of the highest rankings for Chicago Public Schools’ rating system (which is currently being replaced with a new system). We’re using the literacy program as a main component for grades K–5 and then another program for fifth graders.
we will start coming back. what is true is that there are kids who, say, who have dropped out of school who will never make this up. we will see long-term impacts of this, more or less forever, but a lot of this will come back. a lot of parents watching saying what can i do? what is the answer? so, first, i think this should not fall on parents. these are declines which are a result of a variety of factors, but declines which need to be addressed at the level of the school with policies that are going to address learning gaps that are going to help all kids. so asking parents to do this and saying, you know, get your kid high dose tutoring, that s only going to be accessible to some parents. we need to focus on what we do at the school level, what kind of interventions like extra tutoring, like summer school, like extended school days, the kinds of things we know from evidence can work to improve test scores but will affect everybody, not just kids who have the resources to have th
