MASS SHOOTING AT WILMINGTON HOUSE PARTY LEAVES 3 DEAD: Seven people have been shot in a mass shooting at 7th and Kidder Streets in Wilmington. N.C, according to Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams. The shootings happened around midnight. “There was a house party that was taking place inside of a house,” Williams said. “At least seven people inside were shot and three are deceased. They are not being identified until the next of kin has been notified.” Williams says they do not have a motive for the shooting. “We do not feel the general public is in any danger at this time and we are working to get suspects identified,” Williams said.
Raleigh, N.C. Legislation giving North Carolina families the choice to attend in-person summer learning programs in public schools cleared multiple state House committees on Tuesday with support from local superintendents who spoke in favor of the bill.
House Bill 82 Summer Learning Choice for NC Families would provide six weeks of classroom instruction, five days a week, for families who choose to participate this summer. The programs are targeted to students falling behind during remote learning but are available to all North Carolina families.
The bill is designed to encourage student participation by offering core academic courses mixed with enrichment and physical activities. It provides time flexibility to local school districts by prescribing hours requirements instead of days, allowing districts to tailor the program to their specific needs.
RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) It s back to school for many families in Wake County this week.
Now, some students could be headed for summer school if a new bill passes through the General Assembly.
The Summer Learning Choice for Families , also known as House Bill 82, would require school districts to offer six weeks of learning recovery and enrichment after the school year ends.
The bill aims to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on at-risk students and to require the implementation of innovative benchmark assessments.
For students in kindergarten through third-grade, in-person instruction will focus on reading and math. There will be more focused science instruction for third-grade students. Students in fourth through eighth grade, in-person instruction will focus on reading, math and science as well as at least one enrichment activity.
Tim Moore
House Speaker Tim Moore said Tuesday that the conference committee tweaking Senate Bill 37, which would require school districts to provide in-person instruction, has reached agreement on the legislation.
Speaking at a press conference, Moore said the House and the Senate could vote on Senate Bill 37 as early as Wednesday.
A provision that would require teachers opting out of in-person instruction to provide a doctor’s note documenting an underlying condition that makes them or a family member more susceptible to serious illness or death from the virus is the only notable change, the speaker said.
“I think there’s been some tweaks to that language,” Moore said. “I think now it’s [SB 37] tracking some other language that talks about where the person can basically self-identify as being at risk as opposed to requiring a doctor’s note.”
