ANGOLA — The Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County will hold a special meeting on Thursday to entertain the possibility of retaining University Search Team
ANGOLA â The Metropolitan School District of Steuben County Board of Trustees came under fire at Tuesday nightâs board meeting concerning the recent loss of Superintendent Brent Wilson and Buildings and Grounds Director Heath Wagner.
âYouâre going to hire a new superintendent. I donât think you people are qualified for that,â said Larry Ice, one of the attendees at Tuesday nightâs board meeting. âI donât think you seven could hire anyone and agree.â
Wilson, MSDâs superintendent since 2006, sued the school board in March 2020 for breach of contract after it removed a previously provided automatic rollover provision in 2016.
Police pursuit ends in exchange of gunfire
KENDALLVILLE â A traffic stop in Fort Wayne led to a pursuit and ended with gunshots fired between police and a LaOtto man just outside the Johnson Mobile Home Park off Waits Road early Thursday morning.
The suspect, Justin R. Weikel, 40, was transported to an area hospital, according to Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Brian Walker. Weikelâs condition was listed as stable as of 7:55 a.m.
Initial reports indicated Weikel had been shot, but police later said that might not be the case. He was the lone occupant of his vehicle.
No officers or civilians were injured, but an unoccupied DeKalb County Sheriffâs Department vehicle was struck with gunfire.
ANGOLA â A local judge has set the first trial date for a breach of contract case involving Superintendent Brent Wilson and the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County s Board of Trustees, scheduling the matter to go before a jury on July 27.
Online court information shows Steuben Superior Court Judge William Fee set the trial date Tuesday after a telephonic pretrial conference with Wilson s attorney Linda Pence, and the district s counsel, Matthew Elliott, even as he ordered both parties to return to mediation. The pretrial conference was held in the judge s chambers and was not open to the public.
Wilson, who has been the district s superintendent since 2006, sued the Board in March 2020, alleging breach of contract after it voted in August 2016 to remove an automatic rollover provision that previously provided Wilson with a never-ending five-year contract.
ANGOLA â A lawsuit was filed late Wednesday against the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County board over an alleged Indiana Open Door violation thatâs related to ongoing turmoil between it and Superintendent Brent Wilson.
The suit follows Wilsonâs attorneys having first filed a public access complaint, alleging the board held an illegal executive session in January. Public Access Counselor Luke Britt on Thursday said a decision in the Feb. 8 complaint has not been rendered.
The lawsuit asks the Steuben Circuit Court to enjoin the board from continuing to violate the Indiana Open Door Law, something the lawsuit alleges is a continuing problem of the MSD board. The suit also seeks to void any action taken by the board in an illegal session.
